Christmas is coming and this time of the year we are more optimistic, more hopeful and trying to be better. This year has been especially more difficult for all of us and that’s why I decided to take advantage of it and do more activities with Arianna and explore the meaning of Christmas for us.
Arianna is just a toddler with too much energy and is losing focus very quickly, so I had to think of short, fun crafts to do while I am trying to teach her something.
It has been very important for us to follow the Scratch-Off Advent Calendar we made together (you can find the link here) that guided us in doing different activities each day related to Christmas.
Today I will share some of the crafts we already made.
1. Cardboard Tube Gnomes
Materials needed:
- Toilet rolls
- Coloured tissue paper
- Sellotape
- Double sided tape
- Coloured cardboard sheets
- Yarn or cotton balls
- Pom poms
We wrapped the toilet rolls with tissue paper and secured it with sellotape. We used the cardboard sheets to create a cone and squeezed it on top a bit for more effect and used them as hats for the gnomes. For the beards I prefer the cotton balls but the yarn works as well – you have to wrap it around your 4 fingers for at least 20 times and tie it in the middle, cutting the ends, creating that fringes effect. As that is quite bulky, I prefer to make a hole in the toilet roll and tie it under the hat, than to glue it, but I guess it’s everyone’s choice how they want to do this step. After attaching the beard, we secured the hats with double sided tape to ensure they don’t fall off, and glued the nose with a colourful pom-pom. Arianna loves these little friends and was surprisingly well coordinated for this craft.
2. Christmas Sweater and Gingerbread Collage Art
Materials needed:
- Poundland cardboard silhouettes
- Scissors
- Washi tape
- Glitter
- Gems
- Stickers
I love the Poundland silhouettes that they sale in shapes of girls and boys. We used the girl shape to make a sweater (more like a dress) and gave it to Arianna to decorate. We had washi tape, adhesive gems and glitter, but you can use anything really, from foam shapes to stickers or just draw or paint it. We decided to put these in our Christmas tree, so we decorated on both sides.
3. Popsicles Christmas Decorations
Materials needed:
- Poundland Crayola craft sticks
- Glue
- Adhesive gems
- Pom poms
This craft activity takes minutes to make and to look amazing. I glued the craft sticks together without Arianna as she is not patient enough to wait for it to dry well, but she decided how to decorate them. She adores the adhesive gems and chose to use only these, but you can take this to a whole new other level if you wish by adding ribbon, pom poms, glitter, jingle bells, feathers or little lights.
4. Fingerprint Christmas Lights Cards
Materials needed:
- Paint – I prefer ready mix from Poundland as it isn’t so messy as the rest
- Sponge
- Wipes
- Empty cards
- Felt tip pen
Draw a twisted line across the empty card with the felt tip pen. This does not have to be perfect, and can we curved or straight, zig-zag or just messy, it’s really your choice. Put some paint on the sponge and make sure it is absorbed and there is no extra paint on top. Instruct your children to dip the finger in the sponge and press against the empty card alongside the line you drew. if you wish you can draw a line around your fingerprints or leave it just like that.
5. Christmas Silhouette Cards
Materials needed:
- Empty cards
- Paint
- Stencils
You can use ready bought stencils or you can make your own and get creative. This year we got bought stencils, but last year we made gorgeous cards with a tree I carved in cardboard. You can check those ideas out here.
